About

Most of the compositions in my work are staged. The ideas for these come from day-to-day experience. They are not intended as accurate depictions of a fixed reality or meant to capture a specific moment in time. Rather, they are expansive, imagined possibilities referring to the realm of appearances as well as the constructions of the imagination. Capturing that which is ineffable is perhaps what interests me the most, like the moment when you look away and then look back to find that something has shifted, but you are not quite sure what…

By exploring simple yet carefully considered compositions and depicting scenes that can convey a feeling of quiet introspection, I wish to create images that impart a sense of familiarity. Equally of interest to me is the disquieting mood a seemingly harmless picture can project.

The figurative tradition being so vast, my work is also undoubtedly indebted to that of other artists which have shared similar concerns. I have found a great amount of inspiration in the works of some of the artists from the "London School". Their discipline and relentless dedication to the practice of painting as well as the unwavering, at times unforgiving, gaze with which they scrutinize their subject fascinates me still. French painters such as Jean-Siméon Chardin and Gustave Courbet and German artist Wilhelm Leibl are also revered figures. Their brand of stark realism and the excruciating honesty with which they described their surroundings appeals to me precisely because it is devoid of overt sentimentality and yet manages to carry an emotional weight.
